episode 88: pilates for all bodies with allison skewes

Today’s guest is Pilates teacher and studio owner Allison Skewes.

Allison comes from a place similar to many of us, which is that exercise is about weight loss and changing your body. So when she found Pilates and discovered how amazing it felt for her, it became not just a form of exercise but also her career.

As a woman living in a bigger body, Allison’s focus is on creating an inclusive experience and making Pilates accessible to all types of bodies. We have some real talk about connecting with students and how to help them find their own experience with movement. Learning about how to use Pilates as a way to feel more at home in your body rather than trying to shrink it and how this all connects back to improving negative body image and body confidence.

We also talk through what it is like to run a studio and Allison’s self empowerment and approach to running a business is raw and inspiring. For everyone who listening who has ever gone to a small, privately owned fitness studio this will give you a whole new appreciation for the service the owner is creating and providing to you. Spoiler alert, its way more complex than you can even imagine.
